Candles are lit 18 minutes before sunset (40 in Jerusalem, 30 in Haifa); the holiday ends at nightfall, when the sun is 8.5° below the horizon. Every time is local to its city. In Israel, Pesach, Shavuot and Shemini Atzeret are one day shorter. * The first evening is a Saturday: candles are lit after Shabbat ends, from an existing flame. Local custom can differ by a few minutes. Check with your community.

About the holiday

Seven weeks are counted from Passover, and the count ends here: at Sinai, with the giving of the Torah. It began as a harvest festival — the first fruits were brought to the Temple — and the Book of Ruth, a harvest story, is still read. Many stay awake through the first night studying, and the food is dairy, for reasons nobody agrees on.
