About the holiday
Seven weeks are counted from Passover, and the count ends here: at Sinai, with the giving of the Torah. It began as a harvest festival — the first fruits were brought to the Temple — and the Book of Ruth, a harvest story, is still read. Many stay awake through the first night studying, and the food is dairy, for reasons nobody agrees on.
