About the holiday

The Omer, the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot, is kept as a stretch of semi-mourning: no weddings, no haircuts, no music. On its thirty-third day the mourning lifts for a day, by a tradition that a plague among Rabbi Akiva’s students stopped then. Bonfires are lit after dark, three-year-olds get their first haircut, and all the weddings that were waiting happen at once.
