About the holiday
The tenth of Tishrei closes the ten days that began at Rosh Hashanah. From sunset until the stars come out the following evening there is no eating, drinking or work, and most of the day is spent in the synagogue. The day atones for wrongs done to God; wrongs done to people have to be settled with the people themselves. It ends on one long blast of the shofar.
