About the holiday
The Book of Esther tells of a plot against the Jews of the Persian empire, undone by a queen who never says she is one of them. The scroll is read aloud twice, and every time the villain’s name comes up it is drowned out with noise. Four obligations follow: hear the reading, send someone a parcel of food, give to the poor, and sit down to a proper meal. It is the one festival where getting the details right involves a costume.
